I love this! My spouse tells me I've become an "NPC" if I stop engaging in conversation to look at my phone... That's a "non player character," a term from video game culture to describe characters who just stand there and don't do anything. Works great to get me back into real life.
I want you to trademark FACT! Gottman and other researchers talk about the use of humor as a tool to defuse tension and build intimacy, but I can't recall if they have any clever labels for the strategy.
a few years ago i taught my kids a call-and-response thing where they'd say 'tap tap tap' and i'd say 'put it back.' i color printed the illustration by raul soria that accompanied a 2019 article in the NYT and pinned it to my bulletin board, that was the inspiration. i just googled the article to find the illustrator's name and saw it's your byline!
here is the illustration — and your April 24 2019 article :)
I’m going to try this. Although I’m going to make our code word “asparagus pee” to further drive home the disarming silliness!
But realistically I think I’m going to come up against some serious defensiveness. Any other subliminal or Jedi mind tricks appreciated! Have a great trip/vacation 🌞
Great! I love using code words with my kids. Your blog leaves me wondering, though, how did the beginning of the conversation go and how would you recommend starting it? Having a code word as a suggestion is a wonderful end result :)

Love this! When I was a kid, we’d use ‘yellow card!’ to tell my grandad off for talking about politics which had a similarly silly vibe.

My family does a similar thing. when someone is telling a really long story that they need to wrap up we say “turkey sandwich” haha

Love it🤩
This is fabulous! I wonder if your child chose the word asparagus because of the Magic Asparagus episode of Bluey...
Love it!
